Scotch Intro

I have multiple people to thank for my Scotch Collection. My coworker Becca bought me Michael Jackson's Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch, which has been incredibly influential in the directions that I have chosen to expand my collection, none of which I have regretted. I have to thank my dad for loving scotch as well, as it is apparently in the blood. I probably should thank my roommate Tim for not accusing me of alcoholism after I bought my fourth bottle, or after I spent $200 to get my two bottles of Talisker 18 from England.

Scotch is not the kind of spirit that you drink for the sake of being drunk. It should not be drunk quickly, or one will miss it's complexity. It differs from most whiskies in that it is aged for at least 3 years, and most often for 10 or more. This gives it much more of a barrel taste, and less of the harshness of a Bourbon.

When I talk about Scotch, I will always be referring to Single Malt Scotch Whisky. There are Blended Scotch Whiskeys as well, which are wonderful, but I have not experienced any that have the same artistry as Single Malts. I will always refer to a Blended Scotch Whiskey as Blended Scotch.

The flavor that a particular Scotch will have will depend heavily on the location of it's distillery. From what I can tell, there are 5 main types of Scotch: Islay, Island, Speyside, Highland, and Lowland.

Not all Scotch is for everyone. Finding what you like is a conversation between what your taste is expecting and what the Scotch is offering. You will find that there are things that you like but you didn't expect, and things you expect that you may never find. However, there are many different malts out there, with each one of them unique. For each bottle that I own, I will publish a post describing it, and perhaps my viewers will find that Scotch has something for them to appreciate as well.

First

This is my first blog. As such, I would like to begin with what one might expect to find here. As all blogs have a purpose, the purpose of this blog is to document and officially share all of the things that I deem my wonderful readers worthy of knowing and that I actually care to write. I expect most posts to fall under the categories of my favorite things: Programming, Philosophy, Board Games, Scotch, and the wonderful life of the Bachelor. Enjoy yourselves, my readers, and partake of the strange enigma that is my mind.
